{"id":379,"date":"2014-04-07T14:39:33","date_gmt":"2014-04-07T14:39:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.downdogsaltydog.com\/?p=379"},"modified":"2015-07-08T16:06:07","modified_gmt":"2015-07-08T16:06:07","slug":"apples-and-walnuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.downdogsaltydog.com\/?p=379","title":{"rendered":"Apples and Walnuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This could just\u00a0as easily be Apples and Pecans or Apples and Almonds &#8212; it does not matter which nut you use.\u00a0 It&#8217;s so good!\u00a0 You&#8217;re gonna make this over and over!!<\/p>\n<p>Tart Granny Smith apples are the way the to go in this recipe.\u00a0 They are the perfect consistency, taking on a &#8220;bready&#8221; texture when fully softened.\u00a0 This can be a most fabulous thing if you are avoiding carbs\/gluten\/and other questionable ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>So simple!\u00a0 So completely perfect!<\/p>\n<p>3-5\u00a0Granny Smith apples, washed, cored and rough chopped (I leave the skin on &#8211; you can peel them,\u00a0especially if using non-organic apples)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.downdogsaltydog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/photo-1-32.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-383\" alt=\"photo 1 (32)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.downdogsaltydog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/photo-1-32-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.downdogsaltydog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/photo-1-32-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.downdogsaltydog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/photo-1-32.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2 Tbsp coconut oil or butter (or combination of the two)<\/p>\n<p>pinch of salt<\/p>\n<p>1 teaspoon cinnamon<\/p>\n<p>1\/2 teaspoon cardamom<\/p>\n<p>Into a medium skillet on medium-low heat, melt fat and toss in the apples.\u00a0 Add spices and stir gently.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.downdogsaltydog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/photo-2-30.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-384\" alt=\"photo 2 (30)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.downdogsaltydog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/photo-2-30-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.downdogsaltydog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/photo-2-30-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.downdogsaltydog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/photo-2-30.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Let this go for 15-30 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes or so, depending on your preference of doneness.\u00a0 The apples will break down and add their own moisture and the spices will be well incorporated at the end.\u00a0\u00a0We are not looking for browning &#8211;\u00a0if you are getting\u00a0browning &#8211;\u00a0add a little water (not much) and reduce the heat.\u00a0 I like mine soft around the\u00a0edges and a little\u00a0al dente in the middle.\u00a0 When you have reached your desired tenderness, move the apples to one side of\u00a0the pan and add another tablespoon of butter.\u00a0 Turn the heat up enough to\u00a0get a little sizzle and add in 1 cup of chopped walnuts (or pecans or almonds).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.downdogsaltydog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/photo-3-23.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-385\" alt=\"photo 3 (23)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.downdogsaltydog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/photo-3-23-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.downdogsaltydog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/photo-3-23-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.downdogsaltydog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/photo-3-23.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Let the nuts cook (stirring to get all\u00a0sides) for a couple of\u00a0minutes\u00a0until they release their oils and you are done!\u00a0 Gently incorporate the apples and nuts and scoop into bowls.\u00a0 Top with Greek yogurt, if desired. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.downdogsaltydog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/photo-4-18.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-386\" alt=\"photo 4 (18)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.downdogsaltydog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/photo-4-18-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.downdogsaltydog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/photo-4-18-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.downdogsaltydog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/photo-4-18.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This could just\u00a0as easily be Apples and Pecans or Apples and Almonds &#8212; it does not matter which nut you use.\u00a0 It&#8217;s so good!\u00a0 You&#8217;re gonna make this over and over!!
